using U.S. english in HK

after seeing so many UK based english on the forum, i am just wondering if it is possible to use U.S. english in HK school?
i.e. spelling "practice" instead of "practise"
or using the word "center" instead of "centre"

siuesso 2007-11-27 22:21

yes of course. Both of them are available.:084:

robbie01310 2007-11-28 02:06

Those are just like color or colour, I thing they are both acceptable, too.

yukitsu 2007-11-28 05:06

Yeah, it doesn't really matter that much. But if you were over here in Canada and you use color. We kind of laugh at you because you are so "Americanized".

robbie01310 2007-11-29 15:56

But Canada is a part of America...
What's wrong with that?

Canada is part of North America, which is a continent.
Canada is a country by itself, not part of the United States.
If you say that again, I will laugh at you for being ignorant and just like any other American out there, Who are so lost about what Canada is like and its whereabout.
I am sorry, but this is a very serious issue.

robbie01310 2007-12-2 06:42

I am making an argument,
but I don't know what's the problem make you can even laugh.
I still think every American is about the same for me,
no matter they are "North" or "South".
I have several friend live Toronto, but I don't even hear them to say such thing.
If you still laugh at me about that, we can never be friend.

take it easy!

to be or not to be americanize is not that important...

this place is just for leisure...

the word "laugh" may be not that serious as you think...

by the way, i thought some people speak french in Canada?

so, what kind of english they use? U.K or U.S?

actually, every place have their own essense, it doesn't matter as long as you guys understand what they are refering to....

hope you guys understand this piece of shit!

PS: discrimination is not good....

yukitsu 2007-12-3 12:48

I can't take it easy... He's saying that South America and North America is the same thing, when they are both a BIG CHUNK of land that's on DIFFERENT parts of Earth. I know he probably meant North America in his post, but why can't he just say North America, that's all I am asking, is that so hard??? It's just one word.
I was only making a joke, I wasn't being serious at all about the Americanized thing. But was I so wrong of saying that America (the country) is different from saying North America (the continent) and more to that, different from saying South America (which is a continent that's on the other hemisphere). Why can't he just accept that it's not right to say Canada is in America when everyone knows that saying America refers to the country since you are not indicating WHICH continent.
In Canada, the two official language is English and French, and for English, we kind of just use a mix up of both, so I guess, Canadian English, XD.

Yeah, it wasn't in white. *pats pats*
Football over here means the one you play with a ball that looks like an olive and you tackle people, >.<
Unlike soccer, football is played with both feet (you can kick it) and hands (you can hold it in your arms and can  be thrown) and such.

that's right,  how can you mix up those countries=.=
It is totally different from each other.  I don't see any reasion why you are mixing it up.
So, do you think Puerto Rico & Mexico is part of The States?

As an Espanol in Hong Kong, I think that will be no difference between US and UK English.
However, it was said that some markers in the public exams(usually sort of old women=.=), they regard US English as a fault.
