Hi~ My name is Seacy~ ;)

Hey, I see a lot of people here just like "Oh my god, I need some help with my English!". No one really chats or anything, they just like I need help, someone help me. It's kind of boring.
Well, so like I said in the title, the name is Seacy, and I am currently 17 years old and attending High School in Toronto. I came to Canada when I was ten years old, so now it's been seven years. I have really crappy grammar in my own opinion. That's my weakness. I don't know much about Hong Kong and the school there, but I'll give you as much help as possible. So like I said, I am in Canada, so the way I write and spell might be slightly different from you guys. Since, we spell practice, while you spell practise. I want to help and I want to chat. So feel happy to talk to me about basically anything!

@@ Nowaday, American English should be more useful than British English.
Let's learn some American English.

You kind of just contradicted yourself...
You just said that American English should be more useful... so then why are we learning more British English?
In Hong Kong, I believe the standard is British English. It probably would be better if they they learn proper British English. But over here, it doesn't really matter that much. Not only that, but there's a difference between American English and Canadian English. It's so confusing.

wachigo 2007-12-3 02:52

well, i find AE and Be are alright for me
as long as others understand....it's not a big deal

robbie01310 2007-12-3 07:23

America include the U.S. and Canada.
You don't agree, do you?

yukitsu 2007-12-3 12:41

Didn't I explain this to you already? It's NORTH AMERICA...
When you say America by it self, it means the U.S....
There are also the South America, that's why.

I am not really sure what F4 is...
I don't go to school in HK, so I don't know what different grades are called. It would probably be easier if you told me your age. I am 17 years old, and I am in my last year of High School (Secondary School).
Well, I have been taught in an English Language school for the last... hmmm... eight years I believe.
Personally, I am too lazy to read. I only read a novel if I was told to read it by teachers.
Currently in my English Class, I am studying the play Hamlet by Shakespeare. Over here in Canada, we have to study a play by Shakespeare every year in high school. Last year, I had to read MacBeth (also by Shakespeare), and the year before that I had to study Romeo and Juliet.
I just got a new laptop with Windows Vista. It's not in Chinese so I can't type Chinese anymore. T_T
If you ever need any help on English homework, I"ll be glad to help you.

good english to us.

yukitsu 2008-1-27 14:08

Wow, someone thought I was a guy.
I am an eighteen year old WOMAN (just turned eighteen, not a minor anymore, T_T).
According to my birth certificate and my other identification. Also the last time I checked, I am female.

My name Seacy was given by my mother when I was two years old. Ever since then, no one ever referred to me by my Chinese name, except my grandfather. 婷婷。。。

It's really confusing how she got this name too. At first my name was spelled Seasy, but now it's spelled Seacy. Also, my mother got it from a movie called Sissi Princess,  it's a foreign movie...

So yesh, I am female.

Silver 2008-1-29 21:49

Hi, Seacy!

It's pleasant to chat with a Canadian student here, and it's nice to chat with a native speaker too~ Would you mind sharing your school life in Canada? Do you encounter any difficulties in your studies? I am just inquisitive about you as a student who is studying abroad~Thank you.

yukitsu 2008-1-30 04:11

Okay, well I started studying here since grade 5 and now I am in grade 12.
The school is usually grade 1 - 5 for elementary school, grade 6-8 is middle school, and grade 9 - 12 is high school.
In grade 1 math, they study addition, grade 2 they study subtraction, grade 3 they study multiplication, grade 4 they study division without remainders, and grade 5 they study division with remainders. So... as you can see, they are really bad at math.
We are also allowed to use a calculator for math ever since grade 1.

In high school, we are suppose to take 8 courses for 1 year, for a total of 4 years.
A total of 30 courses/ credits are needed to graduate high school, and so there are 2 extra courses that you don't have to take. They are called spares and you don't have to do anything during those period of time, or even be at school.

So some courses we get to choose and some we don't. Like we have to take 4 English course, 3 math course, 2 Science, 1 History, 1 French, 1 Geography, and then civic/career studies. This is only for Ontario High school, I am not sure about other places. The main difficulty I have is English course. The reading and essay writing is a pain.

I remember it was so difficult at first. When I first got here, there are ESL (English as a Second Language) courses for me to take. So the only thing I have to do is math course, which I get 100% in it because it was division with remainders...
(the teacher was like, omg, you are faster than my calculator...)

But then in grade 6, I changed to middle school and there weren't ESL for me. So I failed my first science test, due to the fact that I couldn't understand the teacher in class.

So that's basically it, if you want to learn about school life here. There are some English cartoons that depicts stuff like that.

Oh yeah, if anything else you want to know or I wasn't clear about it, ask.

imnothere 2008-2-12 10:17

i don't really want to contradict, but the last thing you wanted is American English. it is like learning karate (emphisis on footwork) and taekwodo (emphisis on fistwork) at the same time - you will only only end up confused. you might be ok, but you will always be handicapped - spellings, grammar and all. afterall, you (HKG) might not be English anymore, but you were still part of the British Commonwealth and will always be. I believe your passport is the only requirement for you to switch to a British passport.

i don't deny that American-English is more common (movies, tourists, invading armies and all). try using it for your classes and you will get scold - unless the teacher is crap as well. i know i did. :087:

to Yukitsu: I believe 'form' would be the word they used instead of 'year' after junior school. so form 1 would be year 7, form 2, year 8 and so forth. dont ask why i was unceremoniesly dumped into year 8 instead of year 7 when i arrived (maybe they don't like me in year 7?):082:

in Australia, the only concession we had was ESL class, all learning materials are in english. That, combine with the fact that people were bullying me (since i was much smaller then) give me the incentive to learn English very fast.

But ESL class was good to me - I have to only put up with "Macbeth" in shakespeare in my year 10 English class and then did practically nothing and still score A in my remainding school years in ESL.  (ESL can be taken in place of actual English class). I am not sure if I can stand 'Hamlet' - he is so indecisive ("to be or not to be") that I am practically asleep before i even open the first page. at least in 'Macbeth' there are lots of actions (fight! murder! run! kill!)

婷婷 seems to be a common name, there is a 婷婷 in my junior school as well.

yukitsu 2008-2-13 06:37

I don't get what you mean by contradicting. Well like, the English in Canada is very messed up.
We are a multicultural place (lots of immigrants from all over the world), and we have a messed up background.
At first we were a French Colony (New France), then the British came and got us, and then we end up as a British Colony. At that time, everyone spoke French, and eventually it was half and half. So now we have two official languages.
Our English is a split, we use colour, while the American use color. But we also use practice, while you guys use practise. So you can say that we have British English, AND you can say we have American English. So I would just say it's Canadian English. No one here cares if you use British English, or if you use American English.
Our teacher don't really give a damn about it that much. Also, I don't think I'll ever go to HongKong to work or live, and I have a Canadian Passport.

Yeah, Hamlet sucks, but my teacher thinks it's the greatest play EVER!!!!

Well, my full name is 甄熹婷, so yeah. The last letter is common, but the first two isn't.
